Churchgate Sinfonia was founded in 1991 and is based in the market town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. We are a chamber orchestra comprising current and former professional musicians and teachers, as well as amateur instrumentalists who perform to a high standard. All performers and conductors give their time for free and all money other than that needed to pay for the running costs of concerts is donated to local charities.
Churchgate Sinfonia usually puts on three concerts a year in West Suffolk. Past concerts have taken place in various locations in Bury St Edmunds including St Edmundsbury Cathedral, the Unitarian Meeting House and St John’s Church. Further afield, the orchestra has performed in Woolpit, Cockfield and Risby churches. |
Churchgate Sinfonia keeps its numbers small, rarely playing with more than thirty players and performs a wide range of repertoire from Baroque to twentieth-century music.
Recent concerts have featured Haydn’s Concerto in C Major for cello and orchestra, with soloist, Yalda Davis; Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos 1, 3 and 6; Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge by Benjamin Britten; Serenade in B flat K361 by Mozart; On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring & Summer Night on the River by Frederick Delius; Beethoven’s Symphony No 3 in E flat; and Souvenir de Florence by Tchaikovsky. |
